In luxury packaging, material choice is no longer only about aesthetics. It has become a strategic balance of desirability, performance, scalability and environmental responsibility. At Meiyume, deep expertise in metal packaging sits at the core of this balance—enabling the creation of iconic luxury solutions designed for an evolving regulatory and sustainability landscape.

Unbound by a single process or material, Meiyume’s approach is anchored in the Smart Material Mix—an integrated R&D framework combining metals, plastics, soft fabrics and advanced manufacturing processes to deliver efficient, regulation-ready packaging. Sustainable supply-chain management through recognised certifications such as ISCC, ASI and GRS/GOTS gives brands and consumers assurance that sustainability is embedded throughout the value chain.

Furthermore, to mitigate environmental impact and regulatory risk such as those under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), Meiyume works with third-party recycling specialists to assess real end-of-life outcomes—anticipating and exceeding future recycled-content requirements wherever possible. Since 2018, Meiyume has achieved significant breakthroughs in metal packaging in innovation, supported by Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and recyclability studies, that has reshaped its metal solutions portfolio—reducing environmental impact while delivering bespoke luxury outcomes.

Mastery in Metal

  1. Aluminium

Aluminium is a cornerstone of Meiyume’s expertise. Meiyume works across multiple manufacturing processes—including stamping, extrusion, casting, impact extrusion, CNC machining, and hot and cold forging—combined with advanced decoration capabilities to create distinctive designs at scale. By spearheading the use of recycled and low-carbon aluminium, including fully traceable 100% recycled aluminium, Meiyume continues to create category-defining icons.

Notable examples demonstrating how multiple processes can be combined while maintaining recyclability includes a fragrance cap for Chanel and mono-material lipstick for Minus Cosmetics, with the latter uniquely integrating refillable mechanism. Meiyume has also successfully scaled die-cast aluminium solutions such as a fragrance cap for Nina Ricci.

Building on Meiyume’s flagship ECOLUX aluminium component range, we recently launched ECOLUX Recycle, using fully traceable 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) aluminium for thick forged caps. Advanced CNC finishing delivers refined textures and a luxurious shine, overcoming aesthetic challenges commonly associated with recycled materials while significantly reducing product carbon footprint.

2. Zamak

While aluminium is increasingly favoured for sustainability, Zamak (a zinc-based alloy) remains relevant for premium, durable and reusable applications where substitution is not possible. For example, Meiyume collaborated with Guerlain on their iconic customisable Rouge G lipstick.

3. Steel

Steel is another emerging focus area. Extensive trials have led to steel-based applicators for leading brands including Amouage, produced using combined processes such as stamping, forging and CNC machining.

Sustainability: Integrated By Design

Luxury packaging must now demonstrate responsibility alongside elegance. Meiyume addresses this shift by embedding eco-design, traceability and lifecycle thinking into decades of packaging expertise, supported by advanced manufacturing capabilities & a rapid prototyping mindset.

Meiyume discloses our sustainability performance with organisations such as the UN Global Compact, EcoVadis and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), and works with SPICE, Sedex and Amfori, reflecting our ambition to achieve best-in-class sustainability performance.

Beyond metals, Meiyume accelerates circularity through mechanically and chemically recycled plastics and bioplastics, replacing higher-impact materials like ABS with PP, PET and PE. For example, the Ghost Fragrance incorporates 40% chemically recycled material, while other luxury items use 100% mechanically recycled PP.

Forged for the Future of Luxury

With Science-Based Targets (SBTs) approved, decarbonisation is embedded into its operating model—prioritising low-carbon material sourcing close to manufacturing sites to reduce both material and transport emissions. This approach positions Meiyume to anticipate and exceed future industry expectations, including sustainability targets, while delivering scalable, luxury-quality solutions that are ready for tomorrow.

As sustainability becomes non-negotiable in beauty and luxury, Meiyume stands as a trusted partner, offering brands innovative, scalable and measurable packaging solutions.  Stéphane Bulle, Meiyume, Global Head of Innovation, Engineering and Quality: “What truly sets us apart is our mindset—delivering the right solution for each brand, not tied to a single process or material, but grounded in deep expertise, material science, cost awareness and full traceability. Our solutions are proven to scale, with impact reduction at their core, while steering towards full PPWR compliance by 2030.”
