A Journey of Continuous Innovation: Meiyume Pioneers Carbon-Neutral Beauty Packaging with Groundbreaking Carbon Capture Technology
Transforming CO2 Emissions into Cosmetic Palettes
January 2025 –
Meiyume, a global leader and manufacturer in sustainable beauty solutions, proudly presents our journey towards achieving carbon-neutral packaging by incorporating Carbon Capture (CC) resins in cosmetic packaging. These innovative resins help reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at the raw material level, opening up new possibilities for sustainable beauty packaging, as illustrated with the cosmetic palettes.
This innovative product exemplifies our commitment to pioneering design and sustainability, showcasing our ability to navigate complex technical challenges through an experimental approach. With a dedicated team of in-house engineers and designers, Meiyume excels in developing intricate packaging solutions that blend diverse materials and components while maintaining aesthetic excellence.
What is Carbon Capture and Its Significance?
Carbon capture is the process of trapping CO2 emissions from industrial processes before they enter the atmosphere. The captured CO2 can be stored or converted into new materials, as seen with CC Resin. This technology is vital for mitigating climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Hence, Meiyume’s initiative is a pioneering step toward integrating carbon capture technology into beauty packaging.
Driving Carbon Neutral Innovation
In the pursuit of this sustainable cosmetic palette, Meiyume’s in-house experts conducted thorough trials with two cutting-edge carbon capture materials to understand their unique properties and incorporate them into new developments:
- A blend of 80% PETG and 20% Carbon Capture Resin, offering similar mechanical properties to PETG while showcasing a pearlescent effect.
- PP combined with Carbon Capture calcium carbonate, opening doors to innovative possibilities in eco-friendly packaging solutions.
The flagship cosmetic palette showcases the versatility of CC Resin crafted using industrial CO2 emissions. This process represents a significant technical achievement, successfully delivering a fully functional palette that matches the quality of traditional materials. This includes robust impact resistance and durable hinge performance. Additionally, those materials enable full customization, with options for cushion padding or metallic accents, catering to both masstige and prestige markets.
Innovating for Impact
This palette represents more than sustainable design—it tells a story of transformation and experimentation: converting industrial greenhouse gases into high-performance raw materials. Meiyume’s packaging experts managed to create the cosmetic palettes leveraging carbon capture materials, directly reducing CO2 emissions and leading the charge towards “carbon neutral” packaging.
As part of Meiyume’s ongoing commitment to innovation, our packaging solutions, including recent collaborations with global brands like Guerlain, have already demonstrated significant CO2 savings. By integrating carbon capture technologies, Meiyume continues to embrace new methods and materials, reaffirming our dedication to constantly experiment and drive sustainable advancements in the beauty industry.
Commitment to a Sustainable Future
A proud member of the SPICE initiative since 2020, Meiyume leverages Life-cycle Assessments (LCA) and design assessment tools to continuously innovate for sustainability.
“At Meiyume, we are dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint in packaging development through a design for sustainability mindset,” said Stephane Bulle, Senior Vice President of Innovation, Development, and Quality at Meiyume. “Our approach combines innovative materials, cutting-edge research and development, and advanced technology to minimize material thickness and weight while continuously experimenting and assessing industrial solutions. A prime example of our efforts is a flagship lipstick launched in 2024, achieving a 30% reduction in carbon footprint compared to its previous version. We also promote refillable concepts to extend product lifecycles and reduce waste, as well as adopt new materials like Carbon Capture Resins. With Carbon Capture Resins, we’re reimagining the future of beauty packaging—where sustainability and innovation go hand in hand.”
Meiyume will be exhibiting at Paris Packaging Week (PCD) from 28th to 29th of January. Visit us at Hall 1 stand J190 to witness the latest innovations in beauty.
